London label Speedy Wunderground continues to cherry-pick the most interesting bands. Pynch is another wonderful anomaly: this bunch writes catchy songs with a lo-fi sensibility, often with a rather wry and modest wit. Karaoke, for example, talks about how relationships sometimes rely on the most awkward of miscommunications, while Disco Lights draws inspiration from Justice and LCD Soundsystem.

The fun thing about Pynch is that they reduce familiar influences to a kind of awkward, sing-in-the-mirror melancholy. Though dilettantish in execution, these are all bona fide bangers, leaning strongly against the contrarian Britpop of Pulp and the casual coolness of The Strokes. Pynch have already been the support act for The Libertines: so you understand, this is a band to watch.
