Special Interest 

One of the songs by the New Orleans punk collective Special Interest is titled Young, Gifted, Black, in Leather. Not only does that put a rather cool twist on Nina Simone’s well-known phrase, it describes exactly what Special Interest stands for. Brandishing their unique mix of art-punk, glam rock, industrial and techno, the quartet completely opens the playing field again when it comes to the possibilities of punk.

Special Interest earned a Pitchfork Best New Music stamp for the strong second album The Passion Of. Driving drum machines, a swirling layer of detuned samples and driving bass lines form the basis, angular guitar work, and dissonant synths create mayhem and disorder. The center of the malaise is the impressive pipes and razor-sharp lyrical punch of the charismatic Alli Logout, who reconciles camp and political activism in a tantalizing way.

Glitch
