V11 x BIRD presents: LAIR
From the northern coast of Java to the docks of Rotterdam: on July 31, LAIR comes to V11 for a unique live show full of psychedelic soul, funk, and tradition.
LAIR (pronounced as “lah-eer”, meaning ‘birth’ in a local Javanese dialect) is a six-member band from Jatiwangi, West Java. Their sound is a raw, colorful mix of fuzzy psych-grooves, soul, and Panturan Tarling, a grassroots music style from the northern coast of Java, packaged in an energetic live show full of character and stories. They literally make music from their environment: many of their instruments are handmade from local terracotta.
On their latest album, Ngélar, LAIR delves deeper into themes such as community, tradition, and the changing landscape of their native region. Ngélar refers to a local tradition of ‘performing while traveling’, a musical celebration of the moment, the people, and the place. For LAIR, it is a working method, a process, and an ode to their roots.
