Melkbelly sure as heck make an inventive barge of noise on their raucous debut album Nothing Valley, combining dreamy vocals and neurotic guitar outbursts. The sharp edges of the ‘belly are continuously emphasized in their work; harmony and pure sound fight each other like two children who both want to go the first down the waterslide. If Nothing Valley was a real place on earth, it would be mossy, green and a bit strange.

Nothing Valley is the first release on Wax Nine, the new label run by none other than Sadie Dupuis (yes, Speedy Ortiz!). The fact that Melkbelly sounds just a bit more disturbed and impulsive than peers is mainly due to the influence of more idiosyncratic acts like Lightning Bolt, Wolf Eyes, Deerhoof and Paal-Nilsson Love. It comes as no surprise a number of Melkbelly’s band members have roots within Chicago’s influential noise scene. For anyone who digs their rough ’n tumble 90s indie-pop with maybe a few screws loose, Melkbelly is your must-see tonight.
