Mission Statement
The mission of Stichting Vessel 11 is to organize cultural events on board the Lightship Vessel 11 with an emphasis on exposing Rotterdam’s new and up coming artists as well as showing a rich spectrum of up and coming local, national and international bands. Vessel 11 is a platform for training up a new generation of technicians and cultural administrators. Finally, Stichting Vessel 11 will explore new methods of audio-visual production with the ambition of streaming events live on the internet.

Description of Stichting Vessel 11
Stichting Vessel 11 will be a boutique venue, mainly showing live music but also other artistic genres such as theatre, dance, film and comedy. The music programme will plug a gap in Rottedam’s live music market by bringing top international indie bands to the city and giving a platform to Rotterdam’s up and coming musicians. Better bands will be attracted to play here by the uniqueness of the venue, the high quality hospitality Professional performers and production experts will mentor and train the next generation of Dutch artists and technicians in a youth development programme, that will be integrated into all aspects of the ship’s activities.

Background
Vessel 11 is a 1952 Lightship that is in the process of being converted into a music venue. The room in the belly of the ship has been acoustically treated in February 2014 to improve the sound quality. In April 2015 a stage was built in the main room which improved considerably the experience of seeing a band on board the ship. The venue has a top quality PA and light system. Since the lightship was bought in February 2013 Vessel 11 has been putting on live music shows. In 2013 Vessel 11 started putting on live gigs, with 20 different bands (5 of these shows took place in December once the Stichting Vessel 11 was established). In 2014 there were 54 live shows which grew to 63 shows in 2015.

Plans for 2016
In 2016 Stichting Vessel 11 will build on it’s role as a top quality music venue in Rotterdam and reinforce the strong Indie & alternative pop programming. We will

continue to strive to be as financially independent and sustainable as possible. That said, recoganising that V11 is a new stage that is needing to build up a reputation and audience we will apply for funding from the DKC and other cultural funding institutions to help support the music programme.

In 2016 we will expand the number of music events from 64 to at least 73. We will also build up the Save Our Souls dance night as a complement to the live music programming. In the late autumn we are planning to host a V11 Festival with a full weekend of music and extravaganza.

2016 will see Stichting Vessel 11 continuing its collaborations with other music venues and programmers in Rotterdam as we believe strongly that cultural organisations have a lot to gain from joint working and supporting each other to build a stronger music scene in the city. We will continue to work particularly closely with Rotown and have planned a programme of around 50 joint concerts.

In 2016 we will further invest in the quality of the music experience on board V11 by investing in high quality stage & room lighting as well as redecorating the Belly Bar where the gigs are held.

Administration & Management
Stichting Vessel 11 does not regularly employ anyone. Although Jan Visser runs the production management & is periodically the sound engineer he is not financially remunerated for his services. The financial management of the Stichting is performed by Brontë Flecker. Oversight of the Stichting will be undertaken by the board of governors. At present the board members consist of Geert van Italie (Director of the Melkweg), Jan Visser (Owner & manager of V11 LLP) and Marcel Haug (Artistic Director for METROPOLIS, Promoter/booker for OEROL and PASSPOP). The board of governors will have oversight of the allocation of Stichting V11’s assets. Once a year they will approve a plan of action and budget for the upcoming year and the accounts of the previous year.

Financial Management
The Stichting Vessel 11 has the aim of being a commercially viable cultural stage which is independent of government subsidies. However, in these early years while the venue is establishing itself, it will need to bring in some subsidies to contribute some minimal financial support. Through financial & in-kind support form V11 LLP musicians will be given a meal and some drinks. The Stichting receives money through four main sources. 1. Ticket sales, which are used to pay for the hire of the PA and the artists’ fee. 2. V11 LLP, which will provide the hospitality riders, and some financial support to cover additional costs. 3. Subsidies to cover residual costs of the stichting, such as travel and accommodation for international artists, artist guarantees, and the costs of the programmer.

2015 Activities

Vessel 11 partnered closely with Rotown in 2016 with 27 concerts jointly organised during the year. Vessel 11 also collaborated with Rotterdam Riots, Pop Unie, & Stagnation on various different concerts and events.

Throughout the year Vessel 11’s programming and reputation got considerably stronger, as can be seen by an increased number of people attending all gigs and a growing number of sold out gigs (a total of 14 sold out gigs in 2015).

In May 2015 Stichting Vessel 11 was awarded it’s first subsidy from the DKC, Gemeente Rotterdam for €12,000. In December Stichting Vessel 11 was awarded a subsidy for 2016 for €37,000.
